Apple reportedly integrating AR features into iPhone's camera app

Earlier this week, a report suggested that Apple is working on a pair of AR smart glasses like Google Glass. Now according to a new report Apple is also working on a new iPhone feature, where it will integrate augmented reality into iPhone camera app.

Business Insider citing people familiar with the matter reports that a team of people are working on integrating AR functionality into iPhone's camera app. This will allow users to point the device at a real-word object and have them recognized.

The report further says that the AR tech would require creating or licensing a database of 3D objects. The addition of AR would also allow users to recognize and manipulate people's faces as well. 

Apple has already added facial recognition tech into the Photos app in the latest iOS version, and acquired FaceShift a company that was working on such a technology in 2015. Apple also acquired Metaio and Flyby Media who are at present working in the Apple's camera team for augmented reality feature.

The report also suggests that after the AR features are built-into the iPhone camera software, Apple will release SDK for third party app developers, so that they can create their own features using the tech.

Apple will be mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhones next year, and the company is expected to launch the iPhone 8 with a new design including used of OLED display. Currently, it is not clear if Apple will introduce the new AR-based camera app with iPhone 8.
