Samsung Galaxy S8 could feature optical fingerprint recognition, 4K display

Samsung has already confirmed that it will launch the Galaxy S8 flagship in Q1 2017 with new design and innovative features as well as regain consumers’ confidence following the Galaxy Note7 horror due to catching fire.

Now new reports coming out of China reveal details of Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 series. Just like last year, there will be two Galaxy S8 models, the regular model with flat display and the Galaxy S8 edge with curved display.

The report claims that the Galaxy S8/ S8 edge will be the world's first smartphone to feature an optical fingerprint recognition technology. With this type of biometric technolgy, the fingerprint sensor will be placed right inside the display itself, eliminating the need to place fingerprint sensor inside the home button, and get rid of the home button. This will also help Samsung to achieve a truly full screen device. Some reports claim that in addition to the sides, the Galaxy S8 edge will have curved edges on the top and bottom as well.

Additionally, possible specifications of Galaxy S8 edge has been leaked online. As per the leak, the Galaxy S8 edge will have a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display bearing 4K resolution and pixel density of 806ppi, which is something that VR fans will appreciate.

The Galaxy S8 edge is rumored to packs 6GB or 8GB RAM and arrive in two models: one with Qualcomm's yet to announced Snapdragon 830, and the other Exynos 8895 SoC depending on the region. The spec sheet is not hard to believe as Samsung recently started mass production of 10nm Exynos chipsets and 8GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM module. Other rumored features include NFC+MST capabilities for Samsung Pay and 80 percent screen-to-body ratio.

After the Galaxy Note7 fiasco, Samsung is betting everything on its next flagship to regain customers' confidence. If the leaks are true, then Galaxy S8 will definitely have innovative design and features, as Samsung promised in its Q3 2016 earnings call. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 family at MWC in February and launch in commercially sometime in March.
