Amazon's Fire HD 8 tablet gets upgraded with better specs and Alexa, now starts at $90

Last year in September Amazon unveiled the affordable $50 Fire tablet alongside Fire HD 8, Fire HD 10 and Fire HD Kids Edition. The $50 Fire tablet and Fire HD 10 has already received an upgrade, and now its the turn of Fire HD 8. Amazon today announced an upgraded Fire HD 8 tablet with more RAM and storage and lower starting price.

The upgraded Fire HD 8 tablet has 8-inch 800 x 1280 IPS display and is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor paired with 1.5GB RAM (vs. 1GB RAM in the predecessor), and comes with 16GB or 32GB storage (vs. 8GB base model), both supporting storage expansion via microSD card (up to 200GB vs. 128GB on its predecessor).

The tablet also includes stereo speakers w/ Dolby Audio, VGA front camera, 2MP rear camera, Bluetooth and WiFi. It runs Fire OS 5 and is backed by 4750mAh battery, which is rated to deliver up to 12 hours of mixed usage.

The Fire HD 8 is Amazon's first tablet to support Alexa voice assistant, which means you'll be able to use your voice to interact with the tablet asking it to play music, read audio books, open apps, ask questions, search the web and more. It's worth noting that Alexa will not be available in the new Fire HD 8 tablet just yet, but will be made available later this year via software update. The update will also be available for Fire, Fire HD 8 (2015) and Fire HD 10.

The new Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet 16GB and 32GB storage models are priced at $90 (Rs. 6,000) and $150 (Rs. 10,000) respectively). It is up for pre-orders in the U.S via Amazon and will go on sale starting September 21. The tablet comes in Black, Magneta, Blue and Tangerine hues.
